If you’ve been checking the map, there are considerably fewer pink points for Manhattan. I think they are trying to reduce the number of points that Bike Angels can earn. The new changes appear to be designed to be punitive as well; why should all Bike Angels be punished for the misdeeds of the few? I think the algorithm has definitely been re-jiggered.
I think it is a combination of things...but you are certainly on to something. Points are always much lower in the dead of winter, since far fewer people are riding bikes and the stations do not need to be rebalanced. That being said, they are also flipping much quicker...and considering there are so few riders and bike angels out and about...that does seem a bit unusual. By the time you get to a location, the points disappear...and when you then ride twenty blocks away, the points are back in the old location after the next flip. They go from 3 points to 9 points (with no drop off locations) without any movement whatsoever. They are more concerned about people "gaming the system" then in benefiting from the original intention of saving money by reducing the employees necessary to make bikes available to the bike riding community at large. Naive.
